Our weekly farmers market-style distribution allows clients to select the foods that best meet their families needs.

From fresh fruits and vegetables to canned foods to bread and rice, each client receives much needed, nutritious foods that they otherwise cannot afford. We make a special effort to provide foods that can be used by those without permanent homes or cooking facilities since they are part of the clientele we serve.

This year we have given thousands of bags and boxes of food to hungry men, women, and children. Join us and get involved this holiday season!

The Haight Ashbury Food Program currently operates a weekly Pantry Program in partnership with the San Francisco Food Bank. Weekly farmers' market-style distribution allows clients to select the foods that best meet their families' needs. From fresh fruits and vegetables to bread and rice, each client receives much-needed, nutritious foods that are otherwise not affordable.

Days of Operation

The Pantry operates between 12 pm and 2 pm every Saturday, except when a Saturday is followed by a Monday holiday (when the Food Bank is closed for deliveries).

If you would like to patronize our Pantry, please arrive between 12 and 2 to fill out our intake form. At that time, you will be given a half-hour time slot for future weeks. This helps us to keep lines to a minimum and to serve you best.

There are many programs that help to insure that all San Franciscans have food on the table. These include programs that provide free meals and pantry services, but also organizations that help to insure food security for all of us.

CSAs

The Board of the Haight Ashbury Food Programs is looking into having the church as a pickup location for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program.

Community Kitchen

Since 1983, the Haight Ashbury Food Program served hundreds of hot meals each day, four days per week, offering community and connection as well as tasty and nutritious food. The Community Kitchen served more than 1 million meals during its operation.

Recently, rising costs and rising demand for meals forced the Board of Directors to change the structure of the programs at HAFP, as it was no longer economically feasible to provide meal service to the growing numbers of those in need in our small facility. The Community Kitchen closed in early 2008 and was replaced by the Pantry Program, which provides nutritious food to those in need that can be prepared at home.

We make a special effort to provide foods through the Pantry Program that can be used by those without permanent homes or cooking facilities since they are part of the clientele we serve at HAFP.

Food Service Job Training Program

For nine years HAFP operated a Food Service Job Training Project, which trained 164 low-income adults toward employment in the foodservice industry.

The training program, funded primarily through Federal sources, provided training and certification in safe food handling, knife skills, and basic nutrition, but also provided life skills such as non-violent communication, job readiness, budget management, and others.

Almost unprecedented, the JTP had an 83% graduation rate! We are very proud of our JTP graduates, many of whom are working in catering companies, local restaurants, schools and other facilities in San Francisco.
